Polanski wins best director award at Berlinale news
Controversial Polish-French director Roman Polanski won the Berlin Film Festival's award for best director for his thriller "The Ghost Writer" Saturday.
However, Polanski was not hand to accept it as the 76-year-old the Oscar-winning director is at present under house arrest in his Swiss chalet facing US extradition moves for a 1977 underage sex case.
The film's producer, Alain Sarde, accepted the prize on Polanski's behalf.
"I am sure Roman will be very happy," the BBC quoted Sarde, as saying.
"However, when I was lamenting with him that he cannot be with us, he said to me, 'even if I could, I wouldn't because the last time I went to a festival to get a prize, I ended up in jail'," he added referring to Polanski's arrest by Swiss authorities last September when the Oscar-winning director had come to Zurich to receive a prize.

Congratulations for winning
Congratulations for winning the award for Best Director at Berlinale.I hope many have watched the Oscar Awards. It was the fifth time that Jeff Bridges has been nominated at the Oscars, and it's about darn time.(He deserved a lifetime achievement award for The Big Lebowski alone.) Sandra Bullock and The Hurt Locker got the BIG buzz – though The Hurt Locker barely made a few payday loans worth at the box office, though that isn't to disparage the film – it won for a reason. It's about time Jeff Bridges got recognized for his work and his skill, and it's sort of disappointing that he and Christoph Waltz were basically brilliant blips.
